PIERCE COUNTY: Cut frills, not public safety funding

Re: “Sheriff warns of cuts’ effects” (TNT, 1-31).
The Pierce County Council is fond of stating that the sheriff spends his budget the way he wants. But the council gives the sheriff the amount to spend. The sheriff must make do with what the council deems is the amount the department is allowed to receive.
The sheriff’s department has been the most understaffed department in this county for years. But the men and women have carried on, protecting us at the cost of their lives. The sheriff was promised new officers in 2008 to be hired in 2009. The council asked him to hold off, and the sheriff complied.
But now we are so very shorthanded that it is dangerous not only to the public but to the officers themselves. Now is not the time to endanger our families’ lives and the lives of our officers because of money.
Cut the frills out of the budget. We as taxpayers should each get a copy of the budget and see where our money
